Never allow your Web designer to purchase your
domain name or hosting account in their name!
While we can usually work around the hosting
problem, ownership of the domain name is another issue... and
causes us nightmares! If this is the situation you are
in now, immediately contact your Web designer and get
both of these transferred into your name!
How to keep user names and passwords safe
When you register a domain name or sign up for hosting,
the registrar or hosting company will typically send
you your account information via email.
- Save these emails in a folder on your computer.
- Print out the emails and store them in a well-marked
file folder.
- Photocopy the emails and keep a copy offsite: at
home if you work in a store or office; at a trusted
friend's or relative's, if you work at home. If you
live in an apartment building, condo or townhouse
complex, you will want your files stored away from
your building in case of fire, so don't store them
with your neighbour! You can also store these files
in your safety deposit box at the bank.
